FitBit Flex Review

Happy Thursday everyone!  I'm bringing you some random thoughts about my new Fitbit.  I received a Fitbit Flex for Christmas...I had been wanting a fitness tracker for a few months and Christmas was the perfect time to ask for one.  Luckily for me, my in-laws are super generous and got me the flex in black.

I busted out the instructions (because I am a dork) and downloaded the app.  By mid-day on December 26th, I was in business.  I wanted to wait a few weeks to see how I like it before giving you guys a review.

Things I love:
Accountability: I knew my desk job was sedentary, but I didn't realize just how sedentary.  I like that it forces you to be aware of how active you are being each day.  I have also found myself getting up to walk around more and even just wandering around my house to get in extra steps.

Links to other apps: The Fitbit app is great because it sinks via bluetooth all of the time.  I can pull it up on my phone and see my exact progress.  For a Type A person like me, this is AWESOME!!  It also syncs to other fitness/food apps on your phone.  I use MyFitnessPal to track my food and exercise, so it is wonderful that it can link for more accurate tracking.

Sleep Monitoring: The sleep monitoring feature is so interesting.  I'm fascinated by how much I sleep, how often I wake up, and how restless I am throughout the night.

Water Proof: This would be a pro, but I am still too scared to leave it on all the time.  I do take it off when I shower, but that is about it.

Things I don't love:
Accuracy: It is not the most accurate device.  It calculates distance traveled based on your gender and height.  This means that your distance each day can be way over stated (if you are taking short steps...aka when I wear high heels) or way understated (if you are taking bigger steps/strides...aka when I run).  It also isn't very good at track steps if you are not able to use your arms.  My steps are usually way too low when I go to the grocery store and push the cart or if I am carrying something in my hands while I walk.

No heart rate monitor:  I should note that the Fitbit Charge does come with a heart rate monitor.  I think this would be very beneficial.  It would help to keep track of different types of workouts and when you are walking quickly vs slowly.

Not the prettiest thing: I am not super trendy or into jewelry, but I do typically wear a watch.  Let's face it, the Fitbit and watch combo is not the cutest or best look.  It is fairly inconspicuous, but it does make it tough to wear with dressier outfits.

So there you have it...my thoughts on the Fitbit Flex.  Overall, I LOVE it!!  I even ordered 2 new bands to switch out...maybe it will make it prettier! :)

Linking up with .spoons since this is totally thinking out loud!

  1. I'm a huge Fitbit fan! I've had one for over four years now, and I've got all my family on board (immediate and extended). I'm wondering if you would have liked the One more (that's what I have) ... I just clip it to my bra and no one knows it's there. I think it's a bit more accurate (as far as the arm swinging and such). I love the sleep monitoring and the linking to MFP (and lots of reward sites too, my Fitbit has paid for itself). I still use a Polar HRM for some activities, and it's always interesting to compare the stats from the Fitbit to it (or equipment readouts and such). I do wonder about the ChargeHR ... my Polar has problems picking up the heart rate sometime, and that's a name brand with a chest strap! No Fitbit is perfect, but it really does motivate me! Hope you continue enjoying it!

  2. Very cool! I had a tracker for running but I lost it when I was out one day. It's on my list to replace it or find something else one of these days.

  3. Nice! :D I just got one yesterday and have been trying it out. I'm liking it so far, and it fits rather well with my type A personality too! ;P I like having records of everything, so I love that it tracks it all for me. Will be trying out the sleeping part of it tonight! :O
