Treat Yourself Tuesday #35

It is time to get back to real life and back to blogging regularly.  I enjoyed a few days off around the wedding and honeymoon, but now I'm back!  Since it is Tuesday (and one of my favorite posts of the week), let's get down to Treat Yourself Tuesday!!  If you haven't heard of it, head over to Becky's blog for why it is important to treat yourself and to check out everyone's links too.

We went to Puerto Rico for our honeymoon and it was fantastic!  It was so nice to get away and relax!!  We stayed at the Marriot in Condado and it was really nice and a great location!  So close to Old San Juan and lots of local restaurants around.  For TYT, I'm going to recap some of the food we ate while we were there.

Let's start with this bruschetta from the airport restaurant...yes, you read that correctly-AIRPORT!!  It was delicious and flavorful...a great start to the trip!

We didn't get to the hotel until around 9pm local time, so we cleaned up and headed down to the hotel restaurant, La Vista for dinner.  We started with some wine, obviously...you guys know me...wine is a must!

I ordered the special of the evening, which happened to be a lobster pasta!  There were huge chunks of lobster and shrimp were on top, almost like a garnish.

Bobby ordered the tuna steak with sweet plantains and tostones.  Tostones are mashed and fried plantains.  They are amazing...a must eat in Puerto Rico!!

Our big fancy dinner was at a restaurant called Marmalade.  This meal was 5 courses, paired with wine, and probably the best meal that I have ever eaten!  It deserves it's own post, so check back tomorrow for all of the details from Marmalade!!

We ventured to Old San Juan to try Cafe Berlin on day.  The staff was welcoming, the food was great, and it was a wonderful and super filling lunch!!  We were pretty sweaty when we arrived, but the staff didn't seem to mind.  We were seated and the waiter automatically offered cold beers to drink and menu suggestions.  On his recommendation, we had the ceviche.  It was a great ceviche with huge pieces of fish and served with rice chips.

Cafe Berlin is also where we tried mofongo for the first time.  This is a Puerto Rican comfort food made of fried green plantains that are mashed and then served with a delicious sauce.  It can be stuffed with any meat.  Cafe Berlin offered 2 sauce options- criollo or garlic sauce.  The crillo is a local Spanish inspired creole sauce with peppers and onions.  The mofongo was filling and definitely a comforting food!!  Bobby ordered the seafood mofongo which was stuffed with jumbo shrimp and scallops and had a fish filet on the side.

Wednesday night was the last game of the World Series and the KC Royals were playing!!  We had to find a place to watch it!!  We hit up the only sports bar around and ate random bar food.  I didn't even take a picture because we had buffalo wings and sandwiches.  Thursday was similar food wise.  We ate a late lunch at the hotel pool bar because we had an excursion that afternoon/evening.  The funny thing was, all of it was really good.  There really isn't a bad place to eat in Puerto Rico!!

Friday was our last full day in Puerto Rico.  It rained some, so we enjoyed rum that a local told us to buy.  Let's just say, it was great when mixed with soda or pineapple juice, but not so much when you could actually taste it!!

We went to dinner at Oceano-a great restaurant right on the beach for our final dinner.  Since it was our last night, I only took a couple of photos.  One at the beginning...

and one at the end...

We had to eat mofongo one more time before we headed home.  There was a great little Puerto Rican restaurant about a block away from the hotel called Orozco's.  This place was hopping every time we walked by.  One bite of the mofongo and we found out why!  I got the beef and it was delicious!  The best we had on the island!

Are you hungry yet???  I have a few more Puerto Rico posts for this week and I promise to do wedding pictures when I get them back from the photographer.

How did you treat yourself this week?

  1. Welcome home. Glad you and your new hubby had a wonderful honeymoon down in Puerto Rico. I must say, I learned quite a bit in this post about new-to-me foods. I think the Mofongo was the most intriguing out of everything. I actuality took time to look for a healthified recipe. Here's what I found: http://beautyandthefoodie.com/mofongo-puerto-rican-style-plantains/
